Thirty-Three
Charming Lady was a womenâs clothing store located among the Promenade shops at Greenmile Walk, where Sara had worked as a sales associate. On July 31st, she had clocked out and walked across the street to a burrito joint, Amigoâs Mexican Grill. She had stayed there for exactly 15 minutes and 22 seconds. Sheâd come out of the burrito joint and turned to her left. Arun and the two cops had been watching the CCTV footage from the burrito joint. There was also CCTV footage that police had obtained from the Charming Lady.
Jim gave Sandra a stern look.
âMight as well, Jim. Itâs been a while now and we have no leads. If anything can come out of this, it's worth a shot,â Sandra said with a shrug.
Jim didnât say anything. Sandra got up and walked over to the TV stand. She looked at the pile of four CDs Arun had discovered. After not finding what she was looking for, she scanned her card on a small card reader located on the handle of the adjacent cabinet. She shuffled through CDs and came out holding one. Sandra handed it to Arun and walked back to her seat.
âWould you ask Janet to be careful with the cabinet locks next time?â said Jim to Sandra. âWe shouldnât be this careless with investigation materials, you know?â Jim pointed to the now fully open cabinet where Arun had found the first CD.
Sandra nodded.
Arun appeared flushed. He jerked away, put the CD in the player and waited patiently. It was the CCTV footage from Charming Lady. At the top of the screen was Amigoâs Mexican Grill. Just below the stores was a sidewalk, then roadside parking, and below the parking lot was the street. Amigo's was the corner store on the other side; Charming Lady was the corner store on this side. Arun matched the clocks on the two CCTV footage segments, so that they could look at the same cars from both angles. Arun scanned the CD to 3:33 PM, a few minutes before Sara had walked out of view in the CCTV footage from Amigo's.
Watching the CCTV footage from the Charming Lady, they could see Sara at the top of the screen, coming out of Amigo's. She stood on the edge of the sidewalk, just in front of Amigo's. On her right shoulder was a brown handbag. She took out her phone, spent some time looking at it, then put it over her ear. After what looked like a brief conversation with someone, she took her phone out of her ear. She looked at the phone again, for a little longer this time, and put it in her brown handbag. Her boyfriend had confirmed that after coming out of Charming Lady, she had called him to ask if he was going to pick her up. He had asked if she could share a ride instead and she had replied that she could. So far, the stories lined up.
Looking at the CCTV footage, police had also believed that the person Sara was talking to was indeed her boyfriend.
